The real question is whether you are worth staying for.
I built a nearly $20 million business on repeat relationships and referrals. Then I discovered that great work alone does not protect them.
Your clients may be satisfied. But satisfaction alone does not guarantee loyalty. My own company taught me that, and I have spent the years since understanding what makes clients choose to stay.
These are my numbers. Not a client average, not an industry benchmark.

We thought we had built something that could not be taken from us. We were wrong about that.
We had built a nearly $20 million business, and then it collapsed. Not because we stopped working hard, but because we became complacent about the relationships that had built it.
COVID didn’t create the problem. It was a stress test.

My Story
Why I do this
I did not read about this in a case study. I lived it.
In 2011 my husband and I started an instrumentation and electrical commissioning company from a conversation at our kitchen table. Six years later we were doing nearly $20 million a year with 250 people, and almost every dollar of it came from clients who kept coming back and the people they sent us.
We thought we had built something that could not be taken from us. We were wrong about that.
We had built a nearly $20 million business, and then it collapsed. Not because we stopped working hard, but because we became complacent about the relationships that had built it.

People want to tell me it was the pandemic. It was not.Sonya Renée Johnson
Before any of it I spent twenty-five years inside major U.S. law firms, watching how relationships get won and how quietly they get lost. So I have sat on both sides of this. I have experienced what it looks like to win client loyalty, and what happens when you assume that loyalty will sustain itself.
I am not here to warn you. I am here because I have seen how much of this is preventable.

What I Keep Seeing
Six ways a strong client relationship goes hollow before anybody notices.
I missed most of these in my own company. That is why I talk about them now.
Your clients can be perfectly happy with you and still have no real reason to say no to somebody else.
Automation gave you speed and consistency, and quietly took away the human moments that made the connection in the first place.
Your client is connected to your rainmaker, not to your company. The history and the context sit with one person, and that person is tired. When they get promoted, retire or leave, the loyalty does not transfer. The next decision-maker reads your reference letters and tells you: we heard about the great work, but we do not know you.
Either your clients only hear from you when you need something, or the outreach lands like a line item in a CRM instead of a relationship.
You perform, you deliver, you satisfy. Then somebody asks for one moment that made the client feel valued, remembered or known, and there is nothing to point at.
You are spending money to replace relationships you could have kept.

Identify where efficiency and human connection have fallen out of balance.
Create relationship experiences that give clients a reason to stay.
